Sleepy Suzdal
October 21-23

Suzdal is a tiny town just a few hours outside of Moscow and makes up part of The Golden Ring. The Golden Ring is a circle of cities northeast of Moscow, the capital of Russia. They formerly comprised the region known as Zalesye. These ancient towns played a significant role in the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church and preserve the memory of the most important and significant events in Russian history. And it feels like a town straight from a fairytale.

You could see steeples and spires speckled above the wooden rooftops in all directions. Each church was unique and absolute work of architectural art. It was so easy to stroll the streets and loose track of the time.

At times we felt like the only people in this beautiful sleepy town. We were told that Suzdal has more churches then people – and we think we could actually be right, as I think we did see more churches then people!

The food in Suzdal was up there with some of the best we have eaten so far on this trip - and that’s saying something as we have eaten a lot of good food! Gem ordered a venison stew that was to die for, and I ordered some elk and boar dumplings, as well as some moose and boar meat burgers! We over-ordered pretty severely due to the excitement of all the different kinds of meat!
Suzdal is also know for producing a honey liquor/alcohol that is similar to mead, so we decided to give that a go during our meat feast, but after half a glass we decided it was far too sweet (even for Gemma's sweet tooth) and to stick to beers and wine.

Unfortunately the day we had to walk and explore was very overcast – so I can only imagine how beautiful the city looks when there is blue sky. Even still though, it was a breathtakingly beautiful town.
